Luc’s Toast

Owen to read.
I met Owen when he was a wee little lad, a thirty-something, plus or minus. And though my tendencies fare only toward the ladies I did find him to be quite spankable! Jodi can attest, as my requests for her to pass on my sentiments often included she provide Owen with a good smack on the butt from me.

When I came out there in 2016, Owen welcomed me quietly, as Owen does, but with a quietness that always held a look of assurance. The jealous big brother in me vanished. Period. It took only seconds for me to see this was a man who believed in taking care of people. That sealed it for me, for her. I knew Jodi would be taken care of.

But Jodi can take care of herself, right? Well, mmmmmm… While that may be true in the survive and thrive sense, there beats a tenderness in her that is so deep and sweet, so fragile, so warm and loving, that magic happens when she’s a part of your life. I know this, and so well, that I even help my patients overcome hardship with what I’ve now termed “The Jodi Method” of life and living. This magic, it requires a special kind of protection, one grounded in kindness, empathy, equality, and a mildly obsessive attention to detail. I believe Owen is the perfect guardian.

I noticed something about these two, about how they are with those they love, goodness… even those they regard, now that I think of it. I’ve said this many times, separately about the two of them, and it isn’t until this weekend that I came to realize, well, I’ve said it about them both. You see…

You have to be careful what you ask of them, Jodi and Owen. You do.

Owen
Because they will give it to you.

Jodi
And It will be difficult to find a way to match the generosity with which they give.

Owen
But they forgot to teach me how to duck-dive when a big wave comes, so on my very first surfing trip, I went up instead of through a wave... up… swoooop… over… annnnnnnnnd smacked on my back – bonked my head on the ocean floor with that kayak-sized surfboard they gave me.

Jodi
In 2018, I returned, anxious to see them again, this time for New Years. I got to see their new place, hang out, and drink wine and bourbon. I discovered Owen’s love of putting full sentences in parentheses and how much Jodi loves imitating cheetahs when we’re on a relaxing jog along the coastline.

Owen
I love them both.

Jodi
I love them so dearly. My two beautiful friends.

Both
Here’s to our life together.
May the joy never end.
May our backs have the wind
And the beauty and wonder
of love as our friend
guide us and teach us
through the years we spend.

…and many spanks to Owen’s butt.
